What is RSE?
It stands for Relationships and Sex Education (RSE). It is a statutory requirement that RSE will be taught in primary schools from September 2020. To prepare for this, in December 2020, parents took part in a questionnaire that enabled us to gain views and opinions regarding the approach to the teaching RSE for our children here at Whitehill Community Academy. We considered all comments carefully and amended draft policy which reflected both the National curriculum requirements as well as the views of parents. The policy was later approved - see full document below.
At Whitehill Community Academy:
The focus of our teaching is to ensure that the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships are taught, with particular reference to friendships, family relationships, and relationships with other children and with adults.
This starts with pupils being taught about what a relationship is, what friendship is, what family means and who the people are who can support them. From the beginning of primary school, building on early education, pupils should be taught how to take turns, how to treat each other with kindness, consideration and respect, the importance of honesty and truthfulness, permission seeking and giving, and the concept of personal privacy.
PHSE and RSE are very closely linked. For an overview of what your child will be taught and when please see the document below named: PHSE and RSE Overview.
